Eldoret policewoman Lillian Biwott denies murdering her husband

A policewoman has denied murdering her husband at the Eldoret High Court.

Lillian Biwott, 32, is accused of murdering Victor Chepchumba, 36, on the night of October 9, 2023, at their rented house in Kimumu estate in Moiben Sub County within Uasin Gishu County.

The particulars of the case indicate that she shot at him 12 times.

While in court, Ms Biwott preferred the charges to be read to her in English instead of Kiswahili.

Ms Biwott told Justice Reuben Nyakundi that she was aware of the consequences of the charge before her.

Donning a black hoodie top and covering his face with a mask, the accused, who looked relaxed in the dock, denied the charge as she appealed through her lawyer Oscar Oduor to be released on bond.

“I would like the charge to be read in English for clarity purposes,” she told the court when asked which language she prefers to be used during the plea taking.

Relatives of the deceased, through state counsel David Fedha, objected to the application to release the accused on bond.

One of the relatives of the deceased who identified himself as a brother to the accused told the court that their life was in danger if the accused was to be released on bond.

“We as the family of the deceased are still in shock and it will be more devastating if the accused is released soon on bond, she is a police officer who can easily do the same thing she did to our brother,” he told the court.

Investigations indicate the couple had a long standing family feud.

The incident was alleged to have been triggered by a quarrel between the suspect and her husband, the father of their three children.

The court directed the matter to be mentioned on November 23, 2023, for further directions to be given on the bond applications.

The incident happens barely a week after a middle aged man was convicted for hacking her girlfriend, who was a college student to death.
