Ex-Sports CS Amina Mohamed lands Commonwealth role
Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed has landed the role the Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Sport, Enterprise and Development.
Ambassador Amina will now provide strategic directions to mobilise support and rally leadership for SDG targets related to sport, development and economic growth.
The information from the Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland KC says that Ms Amina will also contribute to various Commonwealth gatherings focused on sport, including ministerial meetings.
“In her role, she will provide strategic directions to mobilise support and rally leadership for SDG targets related to sport, development and economic growth. Ms Mohamed will also contribute to various Commonwealth gatherings focused on sport, including ministerial meetings,” the statement reads.
Ms Amina, 63, is a lawyer by profession and her diplomatic role was at the center of Kenya’s strong ties with its allies when she served as the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs from May 2013 to February 2018.
She was appointed to the sports docket following the removal of her predecessor, Mr Rashid Echesa, who was recently appointed by President William Ruto as the Chairperson of the Kenya Water Towers Agency Board.
Ms Amina previously worked as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative for the Kenya diplomatic mission in Geneva. She also led in the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure.
She further served as the chairperson, coordinator and spokesperson for the African Group in the WTO’s Human Rights Commission, and in 2002, she was appointed in an acting capacity as president of the Conference on Disarmament.
The Commonwealth Secretary-General announced the appointment of two other eminent leaders as her Special Envoys, apart from Ms Amina.
Professor Manahel Thabet has been appointed as the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Science and Technology, and Professor Dame Carol Black, Chair of the British Library and Chair of the Centre for Ageing Better has been appointed to serve the role of the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Ageing Well.
The three envoys have been asked to work towards promoting Commonwealth values.
“I am confident that the relentless drive, exceptional talent and considerable experience of these special envoys will help us fill that gap more swiftly and effectively. Together with their support, we will now provide more comprehensive assistance to our 56 member countries as they accelerate efforts to achieve the SDGs and transform the lives of the 2.5 billion people who proudly call the Commonwealth their home,” Commonwealth SG said.
