Former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria yet to appear before EACC
Former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has failed to appear at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) as scheduled.
Mr Mwangi a member of the Azimio Coalition, is accused of defrauding the county Sh140 million in tenders.
In a statement, EACC accused the political leader alongside his wife Ms Jane Waigwe, and other officials of allegedly irregularly awarding a publicity tender to Top Image Media Consultancy and Value View Limited during financial years 2014-2015 and 2015-2016.
Speaking to Nairobi News, Mr Eric Ngumbi who is the spokesperson of EACC the ex-governor had not appeared before EACC at 11 am.
“He is yet to appear at the commission and we were expecting him to do so by 8 am,” said Mr Ngumbi.
Other six accused alongside the governor and his wife include; Patrick Kagumu, Jane Wanjiru, David Maina, David Mamma, Solomon Mutura, and Peter Muturi.
Efforts to get a response from the governor on why he was yet to honor the summons did not bear any fruit.
Meanwhile, a senior official in Kiambu County will today, Wednesday, April 17, 2024, be arraigned in court for demanding a bribe.
Mr John Njue Njiru who is the Deputy Speaker in Kiambu County will be arraigned at the Thika Anti-Corruption Court for alleged involvement in bribery.
In a statement, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) accused the Deputy Speaker who doubles up as a Member of the County Assembly representing the Hospital Ward for allegedly demanding a Sh130,000 bribe.
“On May 29, 2023, at Africana Hotel in Thika town, within Kiambu County, being a person employed by a public body, to wit, Kiambu County Assembly as a Member of County Assembly for Hospital Ward, requested for a financial advantage of Sh130 000 from Anna Nduta Wanjiru with intent that, in consequence, you would allow her to continue developing her plot,” a charge sheet seen by Nairobi News read in part.
Mr Njue was on June 13, 2023, nabbed by detectives attached to EACC and was released on a Sh100,000 cash bail.
