Champions of Peace Kenya has asked members of the public to be vigilant and work with the government to ensure that they eradicate extremism.

Speaking during the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism at the Young Women’s Christian Association hall in Nairobi County Mr Elly Opondo the director of the organization also said that terrorism was also a threat in the country.

According to him, Kenyan youth were most likely to be tricked and brainwashed to join militant groups due to the high rate of unemployment in the country.

“However, there is a need to shrink the pool of radicalisation of the youth as it affects regional stability and it’s a threat to global peace,” said Mr Opondo, adding that the organisation was open to advocating on how to prevent crime and terror attacks before they take place.

He also said that terrorism was not linked to a certain religion and that anyone could be brainwashed to join a terror group.

Mr Opondo says that most terror groups have changed tactics and there was a need to make reports when someone notices that something unusual was taking place.

He said that a lot of money had been set aside by the National Government to ensure that Kenyans were secure.

Giving an example of the money that has been used by Kenya since the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) officers entered Somalia to eradicate terrorism.

“How sure are we that Somalia’s government can deal with the terrorists or once Amison leaves there we shall have given them time to grow even stronger,” he said.

Mr Nahashon Opiyo, who is the Senior Chief in Korogocho also said that locals must embrace the nyumba kumi initiative.

He said that in his area of jurisdiction, he was having constant meetings and trainings with the youth all aimed at ensuring that they do not end up being the people who threaten the peace which is being experienced in Korogocho.

“We cannot work without involving the authorities and there is a need for people reporting whenever there is a danger or the suspect people who conduct suspicious operations,” he said.
