I’m broke, but I’ll take my 50 loyalists on a cruise: Akombe throws shade at Ruto

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Roselyn Akombe has jibed President William Ruto following the appointment of 50 Chief Administrative Secretaries (CAS).

Dr Ruto in his last appointments to complete his executive, almost doubled the number of CAS who were in his predecessor’s regime.

Those who reaped big are politicians affiliated to the president’s UDA, loyalists who lost in last year’s elections and defectors from Azimio la Umoja.

The president has been roundly criticised for the appointments which critics have described as mere rewards to the president’s loyalists.

Among the critics is former IEBC commissioner, Akombe, who tweeted: “I am really broke. But I will absolutely take my 50 loyalists on a luxury cruise worth millions. And my hungry family can tighten its belt. Oh… and pray.”

Her comments appeared to be directed to President Ruto who in recent past public meetings has asked Kenyans to tighten their belts, saying he inherited a ravaged economy from retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The president bloated executive will cost Kenyan taxpayers Sh5.856 billion in salaries, Sh4.415 billion in mortgages, Sh1.128 billion in car loans and Sh1.815 billion in gratuity.

Meanwhile, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has defended President Ruto’s bloated CAS list, saying they found a ruined economy and to improve it, they require a big team.

“This country has a lot of work of reviving the economy and that is why the government needs a big team that will be dispersed across the world to look for the markets of our products,” Gachagua said.
