Influencers have it right, here’s why you should have plants at home

You might have seen some people call themselves plant mums.

These are people who opt to grow and maintain plants in and around their apartments- whether in kitchen gardens or flower pots placed around the house. This is an emerging trend that is being made popular by influencers whether via Instagram or YouTube when they give those random house tours.

It has become so popular to have plants in the house that entrepreneurs are now manufacturing fake ‘life-like’ plants for clients who feel they do not have the green thumb or energy to keep a plant alive past seven days after purchase. As much as we enjoy stereotyping influencers for being tone deaf and clueless, there are times they do get some things right- like keeping plants in the home.

Plants naturally absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. They also help remove toxins and purify the air by absorbing pollutants commonly found in indoor environments. This can lead to cleaner and fresher air in your home, promoting better respiratory health. This is a much better and cheaper alternative to buying air fresheners.

Research also suggests that being around plants can improve moods, reduce stress and increase feelings of calmness. The presence of greenery indoors has a soothing effect and can help create a more relaxing and serene environment, contributing to improved mental well-being. In addition to this, having plants in work spaces or study areas can increase productivity, concentration and creativity because they provide a visually pleasing and refreshing element that can help reduce mental fatigue and improve cognitive performance.

Do you find purchasing humidifiers costly and an unnecessary item in your budget? Well, you can chose to get plants instead. Many plants release moisture into the air through a process called transpiration. This natural humidity can help combat dry indoor conditions, particularly in drier climates or during the winter months, which can alleviate issues like dry skin, respiratory discomfort and dryness of mucous membranes.

And because we live in concrete jungles within our estates and apartments, for a person to have a connection with nature while indoors allows them to experience a touch of the natural world. This has shown to  promote feelings of well-being, reduce anxiety and increase overall happiness.

Last but not least, at the end of the day, having plants around the house is aesthetically pleasing and decor-enhancing. Indoor plants add beauty, color and texture to your living spaces and can serve as decorative elements, creating visual interest and bringing life and vibrancy to various rooms and corners. One of the biggest plant mum influencers in the country is content creator Natalie Tewa and you only have to visit her YouTube page to see how wonderful her home looks with plants strewn all over the place including next to her television. She once said she has over 20 plants, I wonder how many she currently has.
