Inside the chaos of Nairobi’s heavy rains: From Moi Avenue to Westlands
Heavy rains that lashed the city and other places on the night of Tuesday, April 23, 2024, caused destruction and disrupted traffic.
In Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), the rains caused two trees to fall along Moi Avenue.
When Nairobi News visited the scene, the trees had fallen and completely blocked both sides of the road, which is known to be very busy.
The trees fell between 3 am and 4 am, said witnesses who were at the scene.
“We cannot use this road because the trees have completely blocked both sides and no vehicle or motorbike has passed for about six hours,” said Noah Ocholla, a motorbike rider.
Moi Avenue, Nairobi, cut off at Imenti House after two trees fell on the road following heavy rains that pounded the city overnight.

Along Thika Road, at the Kahawa Sukari underpass, no vehicle could pass as the road was completely blocked by water.
Motorists heading to Thika from Kahawa Sukari Estate were forced to return to Githurai 45 and then join the Thika Super Highway.
At Java Court in Anfield Road, Westlands, a gate and a tree were also washed away by the rains.
Mr Abdisalan Adan, who owns the house, said he had fought the developer to stop the project from going ahead as it had led to the collapse of his wall, but to no avail.
“I have tried to contact all the authorities but nothing is being done to help me,” said Mr Adan.
He said he had been forced to move out of his house because of the destruction caused by the construction next door.
Mr Adan said that no one was willing to help him, even though he had clear evidence that the project was affecting him.
It is on the same site where an electricity pole collapsed on April 5, 2024, endangering the lives of local residents.
Locals say that construction was stopped by the National Construction Authority (NCA), but workers continued.
However, the construction workers were lucky as no one was injured in the incident.
The construction had been stopped by the NCA a month ago, but the builders continued. This happened on April 2, 2024.
