Is DP Rigathi Gachagua the king of double-speak?

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is known for both his outspoken nature and willingness to address issues directly, often without concern for public opinion.

However, this trait has led to him changing his position on various matters.

Here are a few instances of Gachagua flip-flopping on certain issues:

Double-speech about Uhuru

On October 6, 2023, during an interview with Inooro FM, Deputy President Gachagua indicated his intention to initiate talks with retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to foster unity and collaboration within the Mount Kenya region. He urged Central Kenya leaders to respect the former Head of State.

This was a departure from his previous stance of openly criticizing Uhuru and accusing him of financial mismanagement.

Devolution promise

On October 19, 2022, Gachagua changed his earlier promise of devolution.

He had initially pledged to ensure the transfer of all devolved functions to county governors within six months of assuming office but later extended the deadline.

He emphasized the political goodwill of the Ruto administration in hastening the transfer, but the change in the timeframe raised questions about keeping his word.

Double-speech against Moses Kuria

The DP appeared to take on former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria on social media over the latter’s remarks on fuel prices.

Kuria had suggested that Kenyans who thought the price of fuel was high should sink their own oil wells.

Initially, Gachagua appeared to tongue-lash at Kuria, urging him to watch his sentiments in public as a public servant.

Only to later defend the controversial CS, referring to him as “our son” and reject calls for his dismissal from the Cabinet.

Later, Gachagua changed his stance, suggesting he would take action against Kuria and rein him in.

The viral Sh3K salon admission

Gachagua admitted to providing a monthly allowance of Sh3,000 to his wife, First Lady Pastor Dorcas Gachagua for her salon visits.

However, he later clarified that this was specific to their arrangement and urged couples to maintain what works for them, discouraging people from misusing his statement.

Fight against coffee cartels

Initially, Gachagua expressed confidence the government would swiftly eliminate coffee and tea cartels.

However, he later adjusted his position, requesting ‘additional time’ to deal with these cartels, promising results in a few weeks.
