June 15th, 2022 1 min read

A suspected fraudster who allegedly colluded with others to steal Sh156, 000 from an Mpesa shop attendant was charged at Kibera law courts with conspiracy to steal.

Isaac Chege is accused of colluding with fraudsters to steal the cash from an Mpesa account of Allan Indeche at Shangilia area of Kangemi in Nairobi on June 13.

Chege allegedly went to Indeche’s shop while purporting to be speaking to a Mpesa customer care staffer on phone and told Indeche he had been sent to his shop by the Safaricom staffer to get help in withdrawing his cash.

He reportedly handed the cellphone to Indeche to “receive instructions” on how to “help him”

Indeche believed that he was speaking to an Mpesa customer care attendant and followed instructions to dial certain numbers after he was threatened with closure of his account.

He later discovered that Sh156, 000 had been transferred from his account in transactions that happened as he dialed the numbers he was instructed to dial.

The complainant locked the suspect inside the shop and called the police who arrested him and recovered the phone used in the alleged conspiracy.

Chege denied the charges before Senior Resident Magistrate Mwaniki Kamau.

He was released on a cash bail of Sh150, 000.

The case will be mentioned on June 28 for a pre-trial and fixing of hearing dates.
