Kempes plea to delegates ahead of FKF’s AGM

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) presidential hopeful Sammy “Kempes” Owino argues Saturday’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) holds significant implications for the future of the sport in the country.

Kempes has implored on the delegates attending the AGM to ensure they make the right choices to ensure the sport does not continue sliding into oblivion.

He urged them to place the interests of thousands of young footballers ahead of personal gain or interest.

“We are aware of meetings held a day before the AGM in a bid to sway the actions and decisions of the delegates in favour of the establishment. I encourage the delegates to resist the intimidation and bribery and do the right thing,” said Owino.

The former Kenya international said he is disturbed by recent happenings where efforts to block some stakeholders from participating in the AGM.

He also noted increased cases of intimidation meted on perceived candidates by individuals at the federation.

“We need to ask pertinent questions to the outgoing federation leadership especially on the preparation for the upcoming polls. There are issues on the registry which the federation has kept secret and are manipulating it from the grassroots because this forms the basis on whether the elections will be free, fair, and transparent,” said Owino.

Owino said manipulating the list of delegates will lead to a skewed process thus rendering the whole process a sham.

“Elections are not a singular event, what happens at the AGM sets the pace for manipulation of the entire electoral process and ultimately, we will end up with another set of bad leaders.”

He accused the FKF leadership of trying to intimidate and harass any perceived opposition and create confusion.

“I hope the delegates do the right thing for the better of the game. The action of the delegates will signal the start of the revival of our football or the continuation of the decay,” observed Owino who has been on the campaign trail at the Coast and in Western Kenya.

Besides Kempes, Extreme Sports Chief Executive Hussein Mohammed, former FKF boss Sam Nyamweya, ex-footballer Macdonald Mariga and Gor Mahia secretary general Sam Ocholla are said to be interested in contesting for the top FKF seat in the forthcoming polls set for October 2024.
