Kenyans living abroad on Thursday, September 14, 2023, paid the hospital bill of Ms Mercy Momanyi, the 20-year-old woman who was allegedly scalded by her boyfriend.

Mercy told Nairobi News in an exclusive interview how she endured a horrific assault when her lover Mr Sheldon Ombongi Okerosi, who is based in the US, scalded her with boiling water at their home in Mosocho, Kitutu Chache South.

The incident left both Mercy and Sheldon’s mother, Peninah Atemba, with severe burns.

Police officer and artist Mr Sammy Ondimu Ngare, said he had received cash from the Kenyans living abroad and that he has settled Mercy’s hospital bill, leading to her discharge.

“Today afternoon I received some cash from good friends to clear bill ya Mercy at Bosongo Hospital. The friends had collected Sh180,000,” he said.

Nairobi News can reveal that the friends and other well-wishers in Kenya have said that they will raise funds to pursue justice for Ms Momanyi.

Mercy and Sheldon had been in a relationship for two years, with Sheldon even supporting her financially after he relocated to the USA.

On that fateful day, Mercy discovered suggestive text messages on Sheldon’s phone, indicating he was involved with other women.

Seeking answers, she confronted Sheldon, leading to a violent altercation. In a desperate attempt to keep the incident hidden, Sheldon locked Mercy in a room after physically assaulting her.

Mercy convinced Sheldon to release her hours later, promising to forgive him. However, the incident was eventually exposed when Mercy spoke to Sheldon’s mother.

Sheldon overheard their conversation and confronted Mercy, accusing her of betraying him. In a fit of rage, he poured hot boiling water on her.

He then assaulted her further by slamming her head on the floor. Sheldon’s sisters intervened and Mercy was rescued from the ordeal.

As Mercy and Ms Atemba were receiving treatment at Bosongo Hospital, the suspect travelled back to Syokimau where he had rented an apartment and picked up his stuff.

He reportedly told neighbours and the caretaker of the building that he was due to travel back to the USA on Saturday, August 26, 2023. Mercy’s family sought financial support after Sheldon failed to settle her hospital bill.
