Kenyatta University suspends classes after death of students, lecturer ion fatal accident

Six students and a lecturer from Kenyatta University who were injured in a fatal accident that claimed the lives of 11 of their colleagues at Maungu along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on March 18 have been airlifted to Nairobi for treatment.

Speaking at Wilson Airport, Dr. Joseph Lelo, the AMREF Flying Doctors Medical Director expressed grave over the condition of the airlifted patients.

He emphasised the need for comprehensive medical intervention.

“The severity of their injuries is alarming. Many have sustained spine, pelvis, and back fractures, resulting in substantial blood loss. Some have also suffered nerve damage, raising the possibility of long-term paralysis. Our priority now is to provide them with advanced medical care and rehabilitation services to maximize their chances of recovery,” said Dr Lelo.

“We airlifted only seven who were critically injured as the rest will be transported by road. Our instructions were specifically to provide airlift support. Additionally, we’ve been directed to take the patients to Avenue Hospital,” He said.

A statement by Kenya University vice-chancellor Paul Wainaina indicated the institution had dispatched a team from the Main and Mombasa campuses to the accident scene to assess the situation, assist the survivors, and provide an accurate report.

“At this time, we are unable to provide specific numbers and names, but we can confirm that there are multiple fatalities. The University will provide a more comprehensive report later today,” read the statement signed by the Vice Chancellor.

Further the institution revealed it had halted all academic activities as a mark of respect for the deceased students and lecturers.

An internal memo seen by Nairobi News indicated classes had been postponed for three days.

“Following this unprecedented tragedy, the University Management has decided to suspend all classes for three (3) days beginning Wednesday 20th March 2024 to enable us to mourn our beloved students,” read the statement.
