Meet the visionary Doctor revolutionising poultry farming for women, youth

In the heart of Kenya’s bustling poultry industry lies a beacon of innovation and empowerment, Dr Teresia Wairimu.

With a passion for poultry farming that transcends borders, Dr Wairimu has embarked on a journey, spanning continents, to unearth the secrets of successful poultry practices.

Her journey began amidst the leafy landscapes of rural Kenya, where she dedicated herself to serving farmers.

Drawing parallels between local methods and global trends, she realized the immense potential poultry farming holds for economic empowerment.

However, she identified a crucial missing piece: the integration of cutting-edge technologies and innovative approaches.

“Poultry farming is a goldmine waiting to be tapped, but we must embrace modernization,” Dr Wairimu asserted in an exclusive interview with Nairobi News.

Enter Jolly Footprints Ltd, the brainchild of Dr Wairimu, a pioneering venture specializing in hatching and nurturing high-quality chicks.

These are no ordinary chicks; they represent a fusion of indigenous breeds meticulously selected for their superior traits.

From the resilient Kari to the prolific Rainbow Rooster, each breed embodies a promise of prosperity for farmers.

But Dr Wairimu’s vision extends beyond mere chick production.

She advocates for a model shift in farming practices, urging farmers to add value to their produce to unlock lucrative markets.

“By enhancing the value of eggs, we unlock the empire of endless possibilities and opportunities,” she declares, her eyes sparkling with entrepreneurial zeal.

Armed with insights gleaned from her interactions with farmers across the nation, Dr Wairimu champions the identification of niche markets as a catalyst for success.

Nestled amidst the tranquil landscape of Nkoroi North, Kajiado County, Jolly Footprints Ltd stands as a testament to Dr Wairimu’s commitment to empowerment.

Here, she works closely with women’s and youth groups, igniting a revolution in rural communities.

For Dr Wairimu, the path to poultry prosperity lies in the inclusion of women and youth.

“As the agricultural landscape evolves, women are emerging as powerful agents of change. By empowering them with the tools of poultry farming, we uplift entire communities,” she explains, her voice resonating with passion.

Despite the closure of the Kenya Crops and Dairy Market Systems project in 2023, Dr Wairimu’s impact endures.

Through her tireless efforts, she has reached over 6,000 farmers, the majority being women and youth.

On a national scale, Jolly Footprints Ltd serves as a beacon of hope for over 10,000 farmers.

With unwavering dedication, Dr Wairimu ensures that each month brings forth a new wave of opportunity, distributing between 15,000 to 20,000 chicks to eager farmers.

But her mission doesn’t end with the provision of chicks. Dr Wairimu goes the extra mile, offering training in professional poultry farming practices, from chick care to egg production, ensuring that every farmer is equipped with the knowledge to thrive.

In a world where empowerment knows no bounds, Dr Teresia Wairimu stands as a guiding light, illuminating the path to prosperity for women and youth in poultry farming.
