Kisii leaders put Ruto on the spot over government positions

By Sammy Waweru November 18th, 2023 2 min read

President William Ruto is facing criticism from a section of leaders from Kisii who accuse him of neglecting the region in government appointments.

Led by the Omogusii Nairobi County Forum, the leaders alleged they are not adequately represented in the government.

The group, which brings together all Kisii community residents in Nairobi County, asked the Head of State to reconsider his stance.

“There is no equal representation in Ruto’s government. The Abagusii Community does not feature anywhere,” lamented the Forum’s Chair, Joseph Nyandika.

He added, “Apart from the one Cabinet Secretary (CS) position we have been issued, what else can we be proud of? There are no Principal Secretaries (PSs) from the Abagusii land.”

Mr Ezekiel Machogu, the Education CS, is one of the leaders from the region in the Kenya Kwanza government.

Mr Nyandika made these remarks while addressing the media in Nairobi.

He was accompanied by the group’s vice-chair, Mr Benson Omae, Ms Sophia Moraa, the chairlady, among other leaders and members.

The forum’s primary objective is to promote and fulfill the interests of the community in Nairobi.

Mr Omae pointed to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s past remarks on who should benefit from the Kenya Kwanza administration, faulting the Ruto government regime as tribal-based.

“The DP (Rigathi Gachagua) spoke the truth. The current government belongs to a few tribes. It will end up being one of the worst in the history of Kenyan leadership,” Mr Omae stated.

Ms Moraa called for women’s consideration in President Ruto’s government from the region, complaining that they have long been excluded from leadership roles.

Kisii region has historically rallied behind the opposition leader, Mr Raila Odinga, in past general elections.

The Omogusii Nairobi County Forum praised the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, stating that the former Prime Minister has consistently ensured the community is well-represented not only in his political party but also in the past regimes he has been affiliated with.
