Man in court for stealing chairs at a city church

A  man who was allegedly found selling plastic chairs stolen from a church in Kariobangi, Nairobi was charged with theft contrary to section 268 as read with section 275 of the penal code, and handling stolen property.

Mr Kelvin Hamisi was charged with stealing 30 plastic chairs worth Sh18, 000 at the House of Prayer Worship Church located at the Kariobangi Social Hall on December 10 this year.

Hamisi was also charged with an alternative count of handling stolen property contrary to section 322 (1) (2) of the penal code.

In the charge, the suspect is accused of dishonestly retaining seven plastic chairs valued at Sh4, 200 knowing or having reasons to believe them to be stolen property in the course of stealing them on December 10 when he was arrested.

The church’s pastor Frida Chumba Sunguti went to clean the church on Saturday afternoon in readiness for Sunday service only to find 30 chairs missing.

She started looking for them in the neighbourhood where he found some of them on sale among second-hand items and reported the matter to the police.

Hamisi was allegedly found with the seven chairs and reportedly attempted to run away before police nabbed him.

The accused person denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Gathogo Sogomo of Makadara Law Courts.

He was released on a cash bail of Sh30, 000. The case will be mentioned on February 2 next year before the hearing starts on May 23 of the same year.
