Nation writers emerge top at MCK Journalism Awards
Daily Nation writers scooped several awards at the fourth Media Council of Kenya Journalism Awards ceremony in Tuesday night in Nairobi.
Reporters Verah Okeyo, Pauline Kairu, Isaac Swila, Eunice Kilonzo and Angela Oketch were top in their categories.
Ms Okeyo was the winner in the environment category for two stories. One was on how humans were affecting migratory patterns of elephants and the other on the killing of Mountain Bull, Kenya’s most famous elephant.
The story on a man’s struggle with throat cancer won Ms Kairu best print journalist in the health category.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
Another story in which she revealed the motivation of a hacker and examined internet safety made her overall winner in the ICT category.
Ms Kilonzo bagged the most promising young journalist in the print category. Her story traced the experiences of a 13-year-old who was married, circumcised and divorced in a year after developing childbirth complications.
Mr Swila was celebrated for a story on the missed goals of Kenyan football.
Ms Oketch was the best in arts and culture for a story on how ropes used to commit suicide are sought-after items around Lake Victoria.
The other winner was Ms Smriti Vidyarthi of NTV for the best TV Bulletin Award.
Veteran journalists Joe Kadhi and Esther Kamweru received the Lifetime Achievement award.
