Civil servants shamed for complaining about delayed salaries

The former chairman of the Kenya Tourism Federation, Mr Mohammed Hersi, on April 7, 2023, told off Kenyan government employees for complaining about delayed salaries.

His sentiments came in the wake of the National Treasury announcing that Member of Parliament and Senators would go on Easter holiday without their March 2023 salaries; and that the Ministry was yet to receive enough funds to pay their dues.

“Dear Public Service, both county & national . Your salaries have never been delayed and it reached a point that you took a lot for granted. You see, we must have a working economy to generate enough taxes to help pay your salaries and fat allowances. It’s a fact that most of you are extravagant (becuse) when we look around, (we) see the number of fuel guzzlers with helpers milling around you and the myriad meaningless benchmarking trips. It’s only in Kenya that we have a lift operator seated in a lift to manage which floor you are headed to. You tell me, if Kenya was your personal business would you have done that? Talk of serious underemployment.

For us in private sector going without a salary is NO news, to be on half salary is never news hence you guys need to smell the coffee and wake up . You have taken a lot for granted for ages. Essential service staff like doctors have been going without salaries for close to 6 months. Legislators were all silent. Now that senators & MPs including CS (Cabinet Secretaries) and PS (Principle Secretaries) are going without salary, you want us to declare it a national disaster.

Finally, if you feel that GOK (Government of Kenya) is not fair to you because GOK is hard up, no one is forcing you to stay on. Please resign, come and join us in private the sector and see how long you will survive. It’s real hustle out here. Stop the politics both divides , stop the useless demos and let us get down to work to fix Kenya. Kenya is broken and needs help. Mna mchezo sana (you people are really joking around)…” said Mr Hersi.

Nairobi News also previously reported that the national broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, on April 5, 2023, told its employees that they would go without pay for March 2023 before the Easter Holidays.

Acting Managing Director Samuel Maina apologized to his staff for the delayed salaries due to unavoidable circumstances, saying they were working round the clock to put in considerable efforts to ensure the salaries would be paid as soon as possible.
