Club confirms player died due to heart-related complication

Mwamba Rugby Club scrumhalf and captain Victor Wayodi succumbed to a heart-related complication, the club has confirmed through a press statement.

Wayodi died on 10th December 2016 at Nairobi Womens Hospital  where he had been rushed after he had gone down on the turf complaining of chest pains. This was during the Kenya Cup clash between Mwamba RFC and Nakuru RFC.

“A postmortem was performed on 12th December under the observation of Mwamba team doctor and Victor’s family. The postmortem determined the cause of death to be a complication of coronary artery disease.,” the statement read in part.  It was signed by the club’s president Mr Alvas Onguru and Mr Cliff Wayodi, the player’s family representative.

The 24-year old half back started playing rugby at the famed Maseno School where he captained the school to National and East Africa championships in 2011. He later joined Mombasa RFC, his home team, and later represented Mamba, a coast-based franchise, in the defunct Bamburi Super Series in 2013. He joined Mwamba RFC in 2013 and had built a solid partnership with Lavin Asego at half-back position. He represented Kenya  Simbas against Uganda in the annual Elgon Cup.

There will be a funeral service for the Thursday 22nd December 2016 at St. Paul’s University Chapel in Nairobi at 2.00pm. His remains will be interred in Bondo, Siaya County on Saturday 24th December.
