Revealed: Why DRC has recalled its ambassador to Kenya

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has recalled its ambassador to Kenya, John Kalunga.

Nairobi News has established that Mr Kalunga was recalled to explain the creation of a political-military wing by Mr Corneille Nangaa, the DRC opposition leader.

Mr Alain Tshibanda, the spokesman for the Congolese foreign ministry, said in a statement that Mr Kalunga was needed in his country with immediate effect.

“The Kenyan ambassador has been recalled to Congo on Saturday, December 16, 2023, to explain to the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Peter Kazadi, the launch of a political-military coalition in Nairobi on Friday,” Mr Tshibanda said in a statement.

The envoy has also been recalled to Tanzania, which hosts the headquarters of the East African Community, of which Congo is a member.

It comes just four days before the DRC goes to the polls for a presidential election in which the current head of state, Felix Tshisekedi, has said he will seek a second term.

On Friday, December 15, Mr Corneille Nangaa, who was head of the electoral body in 2018 when Mr Tshisekedi was elected president, announced the creation of the Alliance Fleuve Congo.

Mr Nangaa openly announced that he was working with several rebel movements, including the M23. It is worth noting that the M23 is opposing the DRC government in the November 2021 elections.

The movement, which is also supported by some countries, was represented at the Nairobi meeting by its leader, Bertrand Bisimwa.

The DRC opposition leader said his team consisted of 17 political parties and several armed groups.

It is worth noting that Mr Nangaa is a close associate of former DRC President Joseph Kabila.

He said the team’s main aim was to ensure that they ‘save’ the DRC, which he said had been in a sad state for the past 30 years.

According to Mr Nangaa, the country is still unstable because it does not have serious leaders who have the interests of the people at heart.

Promising a new door to salvation, Corneille Nangaa says he will do everything in his power to restore stability and create a more conducive economic environment, given the failure of current policies.

Corneille Nangaa, who is at war with Kinshasa, also denounced the “looting of public property” and the “misappropriation of funds.”

He also praised Kenya for being a hospitable country and for even sending its soldiers to Congo to deal with insecurity.
