Ruto hands Ex-NMG boss Tom Mshindi to KBC role

The former Nation Media Group (NMG) Editor-in-Chief Tom Mshindi Nyamancha has been appointed chairperson of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) Board.

In the latest appointment through the gazette notice dated January 19, 2023, President William Ruto said Mshindi’s appointment would take effect immediately.

“I William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, and Commander-In-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Tom Mshindi Nyamancha to be the Chairperson of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation Board for three years with effect from January 19, 2024,” part of the gazette notice reads.

The President has also revoked the appointment of Benjamin Maingi.

Mr Mshindi worked at NMG for 24 years, where he rose through the ranks starting as a writer before rising through the ranks to become the Daily Nation’s Managing Editor.

He retired in 2018, and the board lauded him for his service to the company for two decades.

His appointment to the national broadcaster comes one month after the corporation saw the removal of its Managing Director Samuel Maina over a controversial contract.

Mr Maina was sacked by ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo for committing the government to pay Sh750 billion in LCIA Arbitration without the approval of the ministry.

Later on, the CS appointed Communication Economic Expert Paul Macharia as the Acting Managing Director.

His appointment comes barely two weeks after the President appointed David Mugonyi as the Director General of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).

Before his appointment, the soft-spoken Mugonyi, also a former journalist at the NMG, worked as Ruto’s aide both at the Office of the Deputy President and President for the past decade.
