On September 15, 2023, death appeared to be sending for Instagram influencer Shan Wanita, 21.

She died in a grisly road accident along with the driver of the vehicle, Kevin, and his daughter, leaving her best friend, Muffin Mungai, as the only survivor.

Ms Mungai, still recovering from her injuries, recently shared her account with vloggers, shedding light on the series of events leading up to the catastrophic incident.

“I was the best friend to Shan. I was in that accident. I don’t have much to say about it, but I can only say what I can remember,” she began.

Ms Mungai proceeded to recount how the ill-fated road trip unfolded.

According to her, the journey was a spontaneous decision made by Kevin, one of the travelers.

“On September 15, Kevin just woke up and said, ‘Let’s just go to Mombasa.’ It’s like he was not okay. He said we should go to Mombasa for the weekend. So I called my best friend Shan and told her to join us on this trip to Mombasa.”

The journey commenced, with the group setting off at night. However, as the night progressed, tragedy struck.

Ms Mungai continued, “We were driving at night, and at around 10 pm, the car just lost control, and we began overturning.”

The accident was sudden and violent. Ms Mungai shared her ordeal, “As the car overturned, I was thrown out of the window. I guess I lost consciousness. When I woke up, I saw Shan lying on the road and Kevin lying next to the car. Shan was bleeding from the head. I wasn’t able to observe Kevin. His daughter had already been rushed to the hospital.”

The aftermath of the accident was chaotic. Emergency services arrived at the scene, and the injured were taken to a hospital in Sultan Hamud.

However, the situation took an even more heartbreaking turn. Ms Mungai recalled, “I don’t want to say the hospital wasn’t well equipped to care for the baby, but they told us to rush the baby to MP Shah in Nairobi.”

Amidst her own injuries, Ms Mungai’s concern for her friends was paramount. She recounted her attempts to locate Shan and Kevin, “While in the room where I was receiving injections, I asked to go and see Kevin and Shan because I couldn’t see them. They told me I couldn’t see them because they had already been taken to the morgue, and they would send for me later,” she said, her voice filled with sorrow.

Shan, born Esther Shanice Omwenga, was a popular fashion model on Instagram. She was a friend to many including former governor Mike Sonko’s daughter, Sandra, and other renowned social media personalities.

According to her obituary, her funeral service is expected to be held today, September 29, 2023, at Riverside Estate, Kamulu.
