Speaker Moses Wetang’ula meets ELGIA, USAID officials

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has expressed appreciation to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for its invaluable contributions in providing guidance to Kenya during the legislative processes following the implementation of the 2010 Constitution.

Mr Wetang’ula expressed gratitude towards USAID for its instrumental role in guiding Kenya through legislative processes following the implementation of the 2010 constitution. He particularly commended their efforts in supporting and nurturing the growth of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

“This support is crucial to enhance the strength and credibility of judges, who hold the public’s trust and uphold the rule of law,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of their respective mandates, the Speaker emphasized the need for comprehensive training and orientation of IEBC commissioners. He stressed the significance of instilling a deep sense of commitment to the rule of law and cultivating a knowledgeable and principled cohort capable of understanding their immense responsibilities.

Speaking about the crucial role of well-trained IEBC practitioners, the Speaker highlighted the risks of interference if proper training and expertise are lacking.

Looking to the future, the Speaker aims to transform the Center for Parliamentary Studies and Training (CPST) into a groundbreaking institution, serving as the premier training center for parliamentarians across Africa. By collaborating with USAID and ELGIA, the Speaker envisions a specialized curriculum that will benefit African parliaments and foster capable leadership, thereby promoting thriving African democracies.

“We are tired of people sitting on edge every time we near elections. We look forward to having peaceful elections like Ghana,” the Speaker said.

The meeting served as an important platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies and initiatives aimed at strengthening Kenya’s electoral processes, promoting accountability, and ensuring the growth of democratic institutions.
