Uganda police arrest gays at event days after introducing ‘porn detection machine’

Days after the Ugandan government introduced a “pornographic detection machine, police arrested and detained about 20 gays in Kampala who were attending a fashion show at a nightclub.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community (LGBT) claimed some of its leaders were arrested and questioned.

A gay rights leader in Uganda said that together with his colleagues, they were briefly detained by police who broke up the event in the Ugandan capital late on Thursday.

“They were released two hours later without being charged, although some said they had been slapped by officers,” said Mugisha on Friday.

He added that one of his colleagues was injured when he tried to escape the arrest.

Patrick Onyango, a spokesman for Ugandan police, confirmed the arrests but gave no details.

Homosexuality is illegal in Uganda under a colonial-era law that prohibits sex acts “against the order of nature.”
