Uproar after traffic policeman allegedly assaults and threatens to kill driver
Kenyan online are up in arms after a driver in Eldoret claimed he had been assaulted by a traffic police officer.
In a post on the popular Facebook page, Sikika Road Safety, the man by name Elkana Limo claimed the police officer assaulted him with his safety helmet, causing his left eye to swell shut.
“I was assaulted by a traffic officer in Eldoret who always patrols along Uganda Road between Raiply and Roadblock using a police motorbike. He said I failed to stop and upon stopping me after following me, he hit me with his helmet… and pointed his gun at me saying he can kill me,” Mr Limo said.
Mr Limo also said he reported the matter to the Eldoret Police Station.
Sikika Road Safety called on the National Police Service and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to arrest the aforementioned traffic police officer as Kenyans joined in condemning the incident.
“This is very bad indeed. This is unacceptable and unjustified to road users. Action must be taken against the rogue traffic police officer based in Eldoret,” said Hassan Mohamed.
“How can this happen? He should have arrested him instead…How can you destroy someone’s eye?” posed Sankos Jnr Skoch.
“Action needs to be taken immediately. The officer needs to be arrested and prosecuted,” Peter Maina wrote.
“Traffic cops are not allowed guns while on duty, feelings aache nyumbani asipeleke kazini,” commented Prisca George.
“These are rogue people who wear uniforms pretending to be at people’s service but they act opposite of their mandate,” said Simon Kuru.
“That police officer is very rude and arrogant, every morning at around 6:35 to 7:05 ako hapo akisimamisha magari na kuokota pesa,” added Cheserek Sammy Kiplagat.
That pikipiki police has been mistreating people especially truck drivers along that route…should be arrested with immediate effect,” said Amos Kiprono Sutter.
