Valentine tips: How to remain safe while dating online

By Winnie Onyando February 14th, 2024 2 min read

Love is indeed a beautiful thing, a sentiment shared by many on Valentine’s Day.

For some, this day marks the culmination of a journey that began in the vast expanse of the digital world, where virtual connections blossomed into real-life romances.

Yet, amidst the joyous celebrations and tender moments, it’s essential to acknowledge the shadows that lurk within the digital realm.

In a recent survey commissioned by Kaspersky, a global cybersecurity and digital privacy company, shocking revelations emerged about the prevalence of digital abuse in the world of online dating.

The survey, encompassing 21,000 participants worldwide, uncovered startling statistics.

It showed that 23% have experienced some form of online stalking from individuals they had recently begun dating.

Furthermore, the survey shed light on the common practice of conducting online investigations into potential partners, with 34% of participants deeming it acceptable to Google or check the social media accounts of someone they’re dating. Alarmingly, 41% admitted to engaging in this behavior themselves when embarking on a new romantic connection.

In the face of these sobering findings, it becomes evident that as we venture into the digital realm in search of love, we must also equip ourselves with the tools and knowledge to protect our safety and well-being.

Below are a few tips on how to stay safe while dating online:

Keep passwords secure

Protect your online accounts by keeping your passwords private and creating complex, unique passwords for each account.

This reduces the risk of unauthorized access to your personal information.

Verify suspicious claims

If someone you meet online seems too good to be true, exercise caution. Take the time to verify their identity and claims before trusting them. Look for inconsistencies in their stories or conduct online searches to confirm their information.

Check your digital privacy

Regularly review your privacy settings on social media platforms and other online accounts. Limit the amount of personal information you share publicly to reduce the risk of being targeted by cybercriminals or scammers.

Be mindful of what you share

Think before sharing personal information, photos, or sensitive details online. Remember that once something is shared on the internet, it can be difficult to remove or control who sees it. Avoid disclosing too much too soon to protect your privacy and security.

Create a safety plan for offline meetings

If you decide to meet someone in person whom you’ve met online, take precautions to ensure your safety. Share your plans with a trusted friend or family member, meet in a public place, and consider arranging your transportation. Have a backup plan in case things don’t go as expected.

Use cybersecurity tools

Consider using cybersecurity solutions such as antivirus software, firewalls, and virtual private networks (VPNs) to protect your devices and data while browsing online. These tools can help safeguard your personal information and mitigate the risk of cyber threats.

By following these tips, you can enhance your safety and security while navigating the world of online dating.

It’s essential to stay vigilant and proactive in protecting yourself from potential risks and threats in the digital realm.
