Viral employment contract between mother and 2 sons stirs the internet

There is a popular saying among Kenyans that goes like ‘Kenya sihami’. (I am not moving from Kenya).

The context of this phrase is when Kenyans unleash upon themselves either extra-ordinary amazing, funny or foolish things; and sometimes neutral when people don’t know how to feel about these things.

Now, among these extra-ordinary neutral happenings is Jerotich Kimoi’s renewable employment contracts she prepared for her sons Shawn and Ryan and posted them online.

In the contracts prepared and signed on 20 August 2022, Shawn was employed to Songwo kitchen garden as a farm assistant on assignment to collect eggs daily.

“This employment has come in your 6th year of birth. Your term of employment is on a contractual basis of 3 years subject to renewal upon your performance commencing today,” Shawn’s contract read.

Ryan’s contract, on the other hand, commenced on the 9th year of his birth and was employed as a farm assistant to water the garden fruit comprising of three apple trees, pixie oranges, tree tomatoes, grapes and strawberries. He was also given three years.

The pay, however, is what got netizens commenting. In both contracts, the children were given a pay hike but some felt it was too little.

“You will be earning a salary of Sh 30.00 every Sunday evening from a previous review of Sh 20.00 due to your good work during the probation period, hence monthly pay of Sh 120 which will be directed to your Postbank account 0001….XXX as your savings for future investment,” read the paragraph in both contracts.

The children were also accorded benefits including house allowance, “which you’re already enjoying,” transportation to school, school fees, medical cover and clothing among others. The contracts were signed by ‘Family HR Manager’ CHRP (K) Ruth.

To these contracts, some netizens said Ruth was instilling responsibility in the children while others termed this as child labour.

“…after successful probation. This is part of her approach to make the little men responsible and learn home chores. They’ll enjoy allowances and covers not limited to house and medical cover according to the contracts,” wrote Micheal Ollinga.

“How different is it from child labour,” questioned Abedi Nego.
“Child labour is illegal in Kenya,” added Sir Lancelot.

“@KRACare there are two fellas here earning na hawalipi tax bana. Act accordingly!” demanded Matere Tony.

“Until my kid(s) are out of school & adults, I’ll never pay them for house chores, but I’ll find a non-monetary way to award their work,” said Steven Ngugi.

“Firstly, contracts are part and parcel of life. Teaching your children about contracts early enough is everything. Secondly, earning their pay from honest sources diligently is everything,” chimed Atef Lorika.

“Lmaoooo, I definitely know this is something I’m gonna do. My dad is already tired of me asking him to sign each and every agreement we expressly make,” wrote Mama Cider.
