Visa changes: How to apply for Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorization


Kenya has introduced a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system to streamline the entry process for visitors, replacing traditional visas. The ETA is a semi-automated system that determines visitors’ eligibility to travel to Kenya. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to apply for the new ETA:

Requirements:

1. Valid Passport: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned date of arrival, with at least one blank page.

2. Photo: Provide a selfie or passport-type photo.

3. Contact Information: Include your email address and phone number.

4. Travel Itinerary: Details of your arrival and departure itinerary.

5. Accommodation Confirmation: Have confirmation of your accommodation booking(s).

6. Payment Method: Credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or other means of payment.

7. Additional Documents: Depending on citizenship and travel history, you may need to provide yellow fever certificates, vaccination or test results certificates, financial assets details, and return flight ticket details.

8. Business Visit: If visiting for business, provide an invitation letter from the company and a copy of the company’s registration.

9. Family Visit: For family visits, you need invitation letters from hosts and the host’s identity card/passport.

10. Diplomatic Visit: Diplomats require a diplomatic passport and an official letter from their home country.

Application Process:

1. Visit the ETA website.

2. Click on “Apply Now” and follow the instructions provided.

3. Double-check that all entered data is correct.

4. Submit the application.

5. An email confirming receipt of your application and payment will be sent to you.

6. Upon the Immigration officer’s decision, you will receive an email confirming approval or refusal.

7. If approved, print the attached PDF document or save it in the Kenya Travel Authorization mobile app.

8. The ETA must be shown at all departure and arrival points.

Application Tips:

– Submit applications at least 3 days before travel.
– Applications can be submitted up to 3 months before travel.
– Download the Kenya Travel Authorization mobile app for future use.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority emphasizes that visitors still need to apply for visas as the government rolls out the ETA system.

Visa and ETA Fees:

– ETA charges: $30 (approx. Ksh.4,500) from January 4, 2024.
– Single Entry Visa: $100 (Ksh.15,700).
– Multiple Entry Visa: $500 (Ksh.78,500).
– 5-year Multiple Entry Visa: $160 (Ksh.25,120).
– Visa extension after six months: $200 (Ksh.31,400).
– Overstaying sanctions: $100.
– Referral/Multiple Entry Visa processing fees: $100.
– Transit Visa: $50 (Ksh.7,850).
– East African Tourism Visa: $100.

These changes were meant to be effective from January 1, 2024. Ensure you apply well in advance to facilitate a smooth travel experience.
