Was DJ Joe Mfalme’s statement on DCI officer’s tragic death AI-generated?

On Sunday, March 24, 2024, DJ Joe Mfalme put out a statement over the ongoing investigations of the death of a Directorate of Criminal Investigations officer, Felix Kitosi, after a traffic incident escalated into violence.

The late Kitosi is reported to have rear-ended the vehicle of DJ Joe – real name Joseph Mwenda – and damaged his bumper.

Word of this incident made breaking news headlines both online and offline; and as discussion was at its peak, the DJ issued a statement regarding the matter.

“Dear Esteemed friends, supporters, and well-wishers, this is a public statement solely aimed to address the recent developments surrounding the regrettable incident that has come to the attention of the general public. First and foremost, we express our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and all those affected by this unfortunate incident.

DJ Joe Mfalme and his team have been in close collaboration with the investigative agencies since the occurrence of the incident. DJ Joe Mfalme and his team are fully committed to participating in the investigative procedure and will continue to extend their cooperation as may be required.

We place our trust in God Almighty in particular and the authorities in general to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation aimed at uncovering the truth. Given the ongoing investigations and the sensitive nature of the matter, we shall refrain from making any further statements at this time. We deeply appreciate your understanding and unwavering support. We shall purpose to update you once the investigations are complete,” read the statement.

Following the issuance of the statement, Nairobi News’ attention was captured by the content therein.

This is because it bared the hallmarks of artificially generated content such as having a consistent style and tone, lack of personal experience, lack of depth and insight when it comes to details; and not one that is 100% human touch to show that would align with principles such as sincerity.

Thus, Nairobi News embarked on analysing the statement and after using three AI-content detector tools, we discovered that indeed, large parts of the statement were generated using artificial intelligence.

We sample them below:

  1. AI-content detector tool ‘Undetectable AI’ analyzed the statement and found that the content was written by Artificial Intelligence with a likelihood of it being sourced from Open AI. According to Forbes, this tool has an accuracy of 90%.
  2. Sapling, another AI content detector tool, found that the statement was not written by humans, returning a final result of ‘Fake: 100%.’ Forbes found that this tool has an accuracy of 68%.
  3. Copyleaks, the third AI-content detector tool we used, found that there was AI content in the statement and outlined the first paragraph as one wholly generated using artificial intelligence. The paragraph reads, “Dear Esteemed friends, supporters, and well-wishers, this is a public statement solely aimed to address the recent developments surrounding the regrettable incident that has come to the attention of the general public. First and foremost, we express our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and all those affected by this unfortunate incident.” Forbes found that Copyleaks has an accuracy of 66%.

Several postmortems are being conducted on the late Kitosi as claims of coverups over the death emerged. Earlier, DJ Joe Mfalme and his crew, as well as three police officers were arrested to pave the way for investigations.

Ahead of his burial on March 28, in Kitengela, more postmortems are being planned as the accused are set to appear at the Kibera Law Courts. Authorities intend to charge all those involved in this death with murder.
