Police are seeking to detain seven suspects arrested in connection with the death of Felix Kelian Kitosi, an officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Inspector Fredrick Kosen, attached to DCI in Dagoretti Sub-County, asked a Kibera court to allow him to detain the seven for three weeks while investigations continue.

The seven are Mr Joseph Mwenda Munoru aka DJ Joe Mfalme, Mr Allan Ochieng, Mr Simon Wambugu and Mr Eric Gathua.

The others are three police officers known as Ms Khadija Wako, a traffic officer, Mr Sammy Rotich and Ms Agnes Kerubo.

DJ Joe Mfalme’s team is accused of assaulting Kitosi moments after his Subaru Forester hit their car from behind in Kikuyu Town, Kiambu County. The incident, according to police, took place in the early hours of Saturday 16 March.

Court documents did not link the officers to the assault on their colleague, but they were accused of negligence.

Ms Wako, Mr Rotich and Ms Kerubo, all officers attached to Kikuyu police station, are accused of looking the other way when Mr Kitosi complained of stomach pains and urinated blood.

“He left the house but later complained of abdominal pains suspected to have been caused by the beatings earlier inflicted by the suspects,” Inspector Kosen said in an affidavit.

It has also emerged that a fifth suspect, who was also involved in the assault, has gone into hiding.

Mr Kosen asked the court to give him more time to arrest the other suspect, saying he was in a position to interfere with the ongoing investigation as he was at large.

Part of the investigation, according to the officer, was to check CCTV footage near the scene of the crime to see if the deceased officer had been assaulted.

The suspects, through their lawyers, have opposed the application and the court is expected to set a date to rule on the matter.

DJ Joe Mfalme’s team is still being held at Muthangari police station, while the three officers are still being held at Riruta police station.
