Zambian football fans mock Gor Mahia for ‘hyping’ bus unveiling

By Winnie Mabel November 14th, 2023 2 min read

On the afternoon of November 14, 2023, a Zambian influencer by the name Puncherello Chama posted a video clip of Kenya’s ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo unveiling a new Sh 23 million bus that he donated to Football Kenya Federation Premier League side and 20-time champions Gor Mahia for their official team use.

Mr Chama mocked CS Owalo and the team for the hype that surrounded the unveiling of the bus.

“Only the husband of all teams can successfully Pull off a Bus unveiling. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…,” mocked Mr Chama.

In the video, CS Owalo was seen addressing a crowd containing Gor staff and supporters in which he could be heard saying, “This bus has got piped music, wife, recliner seats, a TV as well as a bed. It has now become a house one can sleep in,” as he laughed and hyped the crowd.

He then flagged off the bus as the team entered the bus one by one to occupy the seats and go on a ride as part of the official handover of the bus to the team. Mr Chama’s compatriots joined him in the mocking banter.

“Awe this team๐Ÿ˜… what more if they were the ones that won the African football league but anyway I like the spirit they are so confident about the team,” said Albert Bito Mhango.

“Why are Kenyans poor? Celebrating a mere bus? Nkt I’m so angry at Kenya now…your neighbors are a shame bro. They’re embarrassing us as Africans. A small township team in Soweto owns 2 buses yet the biggest team in their country is happy for owning a bus ๐Ÿคฃ,” added Yandani Kaylus Fikeni.

“Africa is indeed poor,” opined Ben Salaam.

However, the tables were turned on Mr Chama when his older posts were sought in which he praised a Zambian football team for also unveiling a team bus, and receiving honors when firemen showered it with water from a fire hose.

“No team can beat Nkana FC when it comes to unveiling a team bus. Last year, Nkana FC’s new team bus was given its first wash by the fire brigade,” read his 2016 praise for a team bus.

A shamefaced Mr Chama asked the detractor why he had to pull out receipts to put him in his place.

Gor Mahia received the new bus last weekend as part of CS Owalo following through on a promise he made to the team months prior.

The bus’ procession commenced from Mombasa Road towards Eastlands and then on to Kasarani Stadium. Hundreds of Gor Mahia fans braved the chilly morning weather to rush to General Motors along Mombasa road to receive their new state-of-the-art modern 42-seater bus that had been modified down from 62 seats.

“Iโ€™m happy to have delivered on my promise to the club. Now focus is on the clubhouse and stadium to ensure this club gets to the level of other big teams. I thank all the friends whom we have walked with in this journey. How many are happy and want us to continue helping the club? I have been a fan of the club since 1980 and we should be together at all times whether the club is down or doing well,” said CS Owalo.

The bus also has Polo Generation two, USB charging sockets, a foldable clean and clear TV with Super Sport paid for all the time, and a galaxy roof lighting. The seats are also four VIP seats similar to those used by presidents while others will enjoy luxury 2 by-2 seats.
