MP Sankok condemned by women leaders over ‘preditor-like’ advert

The Maa Women Network, Olamal Loo Ntomonok, has strongly condemned East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) David Ole Sankok following his video promoting the lover’s nest at his newly opened Osim Country Lodge.

In their letter, the women, led by their chairperson Angeline Siparo, demanded an apology from Sankok and asked him to remove the promotional video from all social media spaces and any versions of the advertisement that may exist offline in any format.

They also urged people to boycott Osim Country Lodge and demanded that the so-called ‘lovers’ nest’ be closed down immediately.

“We demand that Hon Sankok resigns or is otherwise removed from EALA for violating Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya on Leadership and Integrity and the core values of EALA. We hold Sankok to a strict standard of proof and ask him to publicly demonstrate the safeguards and policies in place to ensure that women and girls are not raped, defiled, abducted or trafficked for sexual exploitation and abuse at Osim Lodge,” read part of their statement.

Last week, Sankok sparked controversy after urging the public to visit the getaway hotel in Narok County, located on his 28-acre farm.

In marketing his hotel, Sankok said the lodge offered a unique opportunity for visitors to bring a live goat or cow to be slaughtered by professional Maasai Moran butchers.

But the centrepiece of the advert was the lovers’ nest, which is essentially a tree-top house for couples.

“It’s a house on a giant acacia tree with a toilet, two chairs, a fridge and a king-size bed. Lovers will spend the night here in a natural way, like monkeys on trees,” he said.

In this lovers’ nest, Sankok shared that it would be a win for the boychild, who could “get the value for his money”.

“The tree does not touch the ground, only the ladder touches the ground. After you get in, the ladder is removed. Because wasichana wengi wanakula fare ama wana – change their mind,” he said.

Then he added: “In the lover’s nest, there’s no changing of mind. For the sake of the boy child, who in most cases pays the money for the house, we remove the ladder so that they stay there from evening till morning so that the man gets his money’s worth.”

The Narok County Assembly Women Caucus also condemned the crude remarks.

“While Ole Sankok has every right to promote his lodge, we take great exception to the sexual predation that appears to be condoned, encouraged and promoted in the video. The comments, coming from any citizen of this country, are demeaning and promote sexual exploitation, rape and defilement of women and girls,” said Sintei Nchoe, the secretary of the Narok County Assembly Women Caucus,

“We advise all women and girls to stay safe and avoid Osim Country Lodge as their safety is threatened. We also demand that Ole Sankok pull down the offending video from all social media and other platforms and issue an unconditional apology with the same prominence and circulation as the offending video.”

Sankok has yet to respond to the calls to take down the video and apologise.
