Five things we’ve learnt from State of Blogging and Social Media in Kenya


The State of Blogging & Social Media in Kenya 2015 report was launched Tuesday night by Information Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i.

There are the five things we learnt from the report.

1. Daudi Were is the godfather of blogging in Kenya . In 2003, he started his blog, mentalacrobatics.com. A year later, he Daudi also started the Kenyan Bloggers’ webring (KBW) – a website that aggregated all Kenyan bloggers’ site addresses on a single platform in an alphabetical order as a way of bringing individual bloggers together in a community.

2. There are 4.3 million Kenyan users on the Facebook platform, this is according to Facebook’s monetization platform.

3. Kenya has a confirmed more than 700,000 monthly active users on Twitter according to a recent report published by Kenyan technology writer and industry expert Moses Kemibaro.

Of 1.4 million to 2.1 million users in total, 80 per cent of Twitter users in Kenya access the service on a daily basis. The first Kenyan on Twitter registered on March 28, 2007.

4. There is an estimated 15,000 registered blogs in Kenya with 3,000 being active blogs registered blogs by Kenyans on the WordPress, Blogger and Tumblr platforms, according to Kennedy Kachwanya, the chairman of the Bloggers Association of Kenya.

5. At least five social media users have been caught up in the wrong side of the law. These are Allan Wadi, Abraham Mutai, Geoffrey Andare, Nancy Mbidala and Adika Adeya.
