VIDEO – Bodaboda rider accused of stealing colleague’s phone

A bodaboda rider who  allegedly snatched another rider’s phone during a commotion after an accident was charged with theft and handling stolen property.

Newton Mbai is accused of stealing the Samsung phone worth Sh12,499 the property of M-Gas company limited at Gichangi area of Kangemi location in Nairobi on February 11.

He was also charged with handling stolen property after he was allegedly found with the phone.

Mbai and the company’s rider Charles Kiplangat were involved in an accident at around 11am.

Mbai alighted and aggressively approached Kiplangat violently demanding Sh2,500 as compensation for damages.

He threatened to beat up Kiplangat’s pillion passenger who ran away and reported the incident to the police.

Kiplangat told Mbai that the motorcycle belonged to a company and he needed to contact the management.

The company’s official came to the scene and calmed down Mbai but he allegedly snatched the phone from Kiplangat as he (Kiplangat) left the scene before speeding off.

The matter was reported to area bodaboda operators’ chairman who helped apprehend Mbai and he was escorted to Kangemi police station where he was arrested.

At Kibera law courts, Mbai admitted the charges of handling stolen property before resident magistrate William Tullel and the evidence facts were read out but he made a u – turn and denied the charges.

He claimed that members of the public at the scene had demanded that Kiplangat leave the phone behind as he went to report to the company so that he couldn’t disappear.

Mbai denied snatching the phone from Kiplangat.

He was released on a bond of Sh100,000 and an alternative cash bail of Sh50,000.

The case will be mentioned on February 25.
