Boniface Mwangi: Number of times Martha Karua has stood by me

By Nyaboga Kiage September 13th, 2022 2 min read

Activist Boniface Mwangi on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, listed the number of times Ms Martha Karua has stood by him whenever he was in need.

In a detailed Facebook post in which he also gave details of why Azimio la Umoja Presidential candidate Raila Odinga lost to President-elect Dr William Ruto, the activist said that Ms Karua has always been by his side when he needed her.

Ms Karua was the running mate to Mr Odinga in the August 9, general election.

“I voted for Ms Karua in 2013 and for Mr Odinga in 2017. In my view, their coming together in the 2022 elections was a double blessing.

They were good candidates: certainly not angels but their steady track records as brave patriots who have consistently fought and worked for a better Kenya since the 1990s spoke volumes,” part of the post read.

According to Mr Mwangi, the duo represented hope for real change led by liberators, “promising to wage war against corruption and to clean up Kenyan politics by condemning all the rogue elements to the dustbin of history.”

He opened up and said that Ms Karua has been a consistent supporter of his activism and also a close friend who has in the past gone out of her busy schedule to stand in as his lawyer.

He said that in 2016, when Dr Ruto sued him for defamation, Ms Karua was part of his defence team and that they went ahead and won the case.

She said that in October 2017, he was leading a protest against the police for killing one of Mr Odinga’s supporters and was shot in the chest by a tear-gas canister.

“By 2019, the wound had developed a growth that needed surgery. After the surgery, my medical insurer refused to pay. It was Martha who pursued the matter until they eventually settled the bill,” he said.

Mr Mwangi narrated how in 2021 when his home was bombed and the suspect wanted him to be jailed for exposing him to the world, Ms Karua accompanied his wife and they met the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mr George Kinoti and presented their evidence.

He said that the matter is still in court and that Ms Karua is still his lawyer.
The activist said that it is for those reasons and many others that he never mentioned that he decided to volunteer at the Azimio la Umoja secretariat.
