Bunge la Mwananchi warns Ruto on judiciary attacks

Bunge la Mwananchi, a grassroots movement, has urged President William Ruto to uphold court orders and stop attacking the judiciary.

The movement’s president Francis Awino asserted that adhering to judicial directives is not a sign of weakness but, rather, a testament to the robustness of Kenya’s democratic foundations.

“We implore the President to recognize the gravity of this moment. Embrace the responsibility that his position entails and lead by example. Show the nation that the rule of law is not a mere slogan but a guiding principle that shapes our collective destiny,” said Awino.

“The President should understand that upholding court orders is not a sign of weakness but a demonstration of strength – the strength to withstand challenges, the strength to foster trust, and the strength to ensure that our democracy endures,” he added.

The civic advocacy group expressed deep concern over statements recently made by President Ruto and other government officials targeting the judiciary.

President Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua have consistently claimed that the judiciary is corrupted and out to derail his development agenda.

“We are here to make a plea, a plea for the adherence to the very principles that define our great nation,” Awino added.

Awino’s comments come days after lawyers peacefully demonstrated against President William Ruto’s judiciary comments.

Chief Justice Martha Koome said the Judiciary has written to Ruto seeking an audience with the view to establishing the genesis of his complaints against the Judiciary.

“He might have received information because we have various machinery and agencies for collecting information and we would like to engage him so that he can give us that information.

“We will be looking out for that dialogue with the President. We have written to him and I believe that the President is going to give us an appointment,” said Koome.

President Ruto also indicated he was ready to dialogue with Ms Koome.
