City lawyer accused of killing son returns to police custody
City lawyer Assa Nyakundi, accused of shooting dead his son Joseph at point blank range, was on Tuesday night discharged from Nairobi Hospital.
The lawyer is now in custody at Muthaiga police station, Nairobi News can reveal.
Mr Nyakundi was released from his air-conditioned room in Ward LMF on the third floor of Nairobi Hospital on Tuesday at 11:45pm.
“He was released and he is in police custody now awaiting to be arraigned in court,” an officer privy to the investigations told Nairobi News.
Nairobi News has learnt that the police have been busy combining for evidence against the city lawyer since he shot his son on March 17 near his Muthaiga home. Joseph was pronounced dead on arrival at the Aga Khan hospital.
In his statement to the police before he was taken to Nairobi hospital, Mr Nyakundi claimed to have shot his son accidentally from inside the car. However, investigations suggest the shot was fired from outside the car.
On April 3, 2019, Mr Godfrey Munene, the investigating officer in the case, told the court that police were unable to record a statement from the hospitalised lawyer.
Mr Munene said that the lawyer looked confused and unstable in the number of times he visited him in hospital.
“I visited the suspect and I can confirm that he is still sick and will need more time to see if I can record his statement,” Munene said.
Mr Nyakundi’s lawyer Mr Sam Nyaberi also told the court that his client was still receiving treatment as his blood pressure was still high.
