City’s police bosses meet over terror crackdown

Nairobi’s top police brass held a meeting on Wednesday to assess the ongoing crackdown on illegal immigrants and suspected terrorist cells in the city.

The meeting, chaired by Nairobi county police commander Benson Kibui, was attended by all the heads of the eight police divisions in Nairobi.

The officers audited aspects of the Operation Usalama Watch which is on its second week.

The senior police officers explored possible areas, beyond Eastleigh, that are to be targeted in the operation. They also assessed how to handle people arrested in the swoops.

On Monday night, police had conducted a security swoop in South C in which 34 people were arrested. Those arrested did not have the right documents to support their stay in the country.

The meeting comes as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) started investigating claims that police have engaged in illegal activities during the operation.

IPOA wants to establish whether police were involved in ethnic profiling, illegal detention and deportation, or holding suspects incommunicado.
