Controversial death leads to closure of maternity clinic in Dagoretti North

A health team from the Nairobi County Government accompanied by officers from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) temporarily closed a popular maternity centre in Kawangware on Wednesday.

The team visited Muteithania Nursing and Maternity and said the facility was not equipped to offer such services, a decision that was reached after inspection.

According to Mohamed Ahmed, who heads the Department of Public Inspection at KMPDU, the move to close the facility was taken after complaints from members of the public regarding the quality of services offered.

Mr Ahmed said complaints had been received regarding and especially after a recent case related to the death of a lady who was seeking services at the facility.

The management at the facility was put to task to explain the circumstances that led to the death of their patient, identified as Maureen Achieng.

Nairobi News understands the management said the patient visited the facility in the evening and was ushered in while in critical condition apparently as she was in labour pains.

They commenced attending to her before taking in her particulars.

The caregivers believed it would be a normal delivery, so the management explained and transferred the patient straight to the delivery room.

“While in the delivery room, the nurses realized that the placenta was at number one, then the baby followed and she successfully delivered. The baby made some noise, which to us as professional health workers indicates that the baby is alive,” one of the workers is reported to have said.

But sources say the baby died before making a single sound.

The narration was not enough to convince the County officials, who closed the facility until investigations were complete.

Health Chief Officer Mr Geoffrey Mosiria said the county was carrying a crackdown on health facilities operating in the county to determine those which running illegally.
