Devastation hits Moi Avenue: Trees down, road blocked
Nairobi residents were greeted with the aftermath of heavy rains, with significant devastation across the city.
In the heart of the central business district, Moi Avenue was blocked when two large trees in front of the Nairobi Sports House on Moi Avenue collapsed near Imenti House, completely blocking the road.
At the time of going to press, Nairobi County staff were on the scene and had begun clearing the area to restore traffic flow.
However, the impact went beyond road closures, with parts of the fallen trees damaging businesses in Imenti House.

Adding to the chaos, motorists and pedestrians were urged to exercise caution and find alternative routes, particularly on Thika Road, especially from Kahawa Wendani to Kenyatta University, as heavy flooding made sections impassable.
The flooding posed a major challenge to vehicles attempting to navigate the affected areas.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring regions, the effects of the heavy rains extended beyond the urban centres.
The Athi River overflowed its banks and flooded areas such as Syokimau, Kitengela, Kamulu, parts of Thika and Kinanie in Machakos County. The overflowing river caused flooding, disruption and risk to the local population and infrastructure.
Namanga Road is impassable due to the Athi River overflow.
The aftermath of the heavy rains in Nairobi has exposed the vulnerability of the city’s infrastructure to extreme weather events and highlighted the need for comprehensive measures to mitigate the impact of such events in the future.
