Eldoret duo in court over mother’s death threat in farm dispute
Two men aged 35 and 40 have been charged at an Eldoret court with threatening to kill their mother.
Alex Rono and Peter Rono were accused of issuing death threats to Angeline Rono in her house in Chepkong village in Ainabkoi Sub County. The trio were reportedly in dispute over family land.
The court heard that the duo forcefully wanted their mother to give each of them portions of the family land for sale.
When their mother, 70, a widow, challenged their request they resorted to threatening her with death.
The charge sheet stated on May 7, 2023, while armed with a machete, they threatened to harm their mother to chop off their mother accusing her denying them their family inheritance.
The court heard that the pair uttered the words “tutakukatakata kwa vipandevipande ikiwa hautatupatia shamba letu (We will cut you into pieces if you will not allocate us a share of our family land )” to their mother.
State counsel Patricia Kirui told the court that those words were believed to be death threats to the complainant.
They were also charged with creating a disturbance in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace contrary to Section 95 (1) of the Penal Code.
The court also heard that on the day of the incident the accused chased Ms Rono from her home.
The accused denied the charges before Eldoret Principal Magistrate Mogire Onkoba.
Through their lawyer they told the court that the case was emanating from a family property dispute and they were ready to solve it at family level given opportunity.
The court directed each of the accused to be released on Sh7,000 cash bail.
The matter will be mentioned on May 22 for pre-trial directions.
