Ex-Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nyamweya has taken his campaigns to Central Kenya in a bid to make a comeback.

Nyamweya, who doubles up as a patron of popular FKF Premier League side Shabana, met with County Football Associations (CFA) delegates from Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu on October 28, 2023.

He later held a closed-door meeting with delegates from Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Marsabit, Isiolo and Vihiga.

“I am here to listen to what the football stakeholders are saying,” Nyamweya told Nairobi News.

“They need fresh ideas mostly from a veteran leader. We are heading into a serious phase of football because the country will soon be hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and possibly the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN). We need to plan well. And that is why we need to have elections as soon as possible.”

“Nyamweya was at the helm of football as FKF president between 2011 and 2016.

He is remembered for steering the men’s national team, commonly referred to as Harambee Stars, to victory at the 2013 Cecafa Senior Challenge which was hosted in Kenya. Kenya defeated Sudan 2-0 in a pulsating final at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Besides Nyamweya, other candidates who have shown an interest in contesting for the FKF presidency are Samuel Owino Kempes, a former Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars footballer based in the USA, Gor Mahia secretary general Sam Ocholla and Extreme Sports Chief Executive Hussein Mohammed.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba recently told the National Assembly he expects the FKF polls to be held before February 2024.

Namwamba is expected to form a technical committee that will set the rules to oversee the polls. This will include a possible merger between FKF which is recognised by Fifa, and the County Football Associaitions (CFA) registered by the government.
