Gachagua urges Kenyans in the Diaspora to invest in government bonds
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has encouraged Kenyan expatriates to consider investing in Treasury bonds and bills, assuring them of the security of their investments and promising better returns.
During an interactive session with Kenyans living in Belgium on October 24, 2023, the DP emphasized that the government had streamlined the process for them to purchase these financial instruments, making it more convenient and profitable for them.
“The safest way to invest your money in Kenya is through government bonds and bills. They are the most secure means of investing back home because they are backed by the government’s guarantee, and they offer very competitive interest rates.” He further explained that by investing in these instruments, Kenyan expatriates can earn interest that is equivalent to what the government currently pays to foreign lenders for their funds.
Gachagua, who is representing President William Ruto at the Gateway Summit hosted by the European Commission in Belgium, also encouraged Kenyan diaspora to consider participating in the affordable housing program, a flagship initiative of the Kenya Kwanza Administration.
He highlighted that these housing units are not only affordable but are also being constructed in areas with well-established infrastructure, minimizing additional costs associated with land, roads, and utilities.
The Deputy President assured the diaspora community of the Ruto administration’s commitment to collaborating closely with them, exemplified by the establishment of the State Department of Diaspora Affairs.
He stressed the importance of the diaspora nation, stating, “The Diaspora community is a critical focus for the Ruto administration. This is why the President established the State Department of Diaspora Affairs to work hand in hand with you in addressing your concerns and unlocking your investment potential.”
To facilitate greater engagement in national affairs, Gachagua pledged to streamline processes such as passport applications and renewals, as well as other essential documentation, making them more accessible and efficient for Kenyan expatriates.
He also emphasized the government’s overhaul of the healthcare system, making it more effective, efficient, and comprehensive, with a specific focus on covering terminal illnesses. The healthcare system’s contribution structure has been revised to ensure that those with higher incomes contribute more, while those with lower incomes pay less, and individuals with no income receive assistance at no cost.
