Gachagua vows to protect Mt Kenya’s interests ‘like he does with boiling milk’

By Sammy Waweru February 17th, 2024 2 min read

Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua stirred laughter at a rally in Murang’a by suggesting he would ensure the interests of people in the region will be taken care of the way one does with boiling milk.

He made the remarks on February 15, 2024, at a political rally attended by several politicians including President William Ruto.

According to the DP who is the second in command in the Executive, the reward to the region’s electorates is a result of voting overwhelmingly for the Head of State in the 2022 general elections.

President Ruto amassed more than 70% of the votes cast, a tally that went a long way in establishing his presidential win over Raila Odinga, his closest challenger.

For that, Mr Gachagua affirmed he would push Dr Ruto to ensure he develops the region as a ‘reward’.

The DP who hails from the region stated that whenever someone does a good thing, he should always be rewarded back with what he or she offers.

“Mt Kenya electorates did well to the President by electing him, alongside me. Good things are paid with good things. Before you got us into office, we were under siege, especially me; I was on a thin line. What you did for us, we won’t forget about you, and we will always take care of you like milk,” said the DP.

And in case the region’s requests are not met as promised, Gachagua said he will not relent in pushing for them.

Causing laughter, he said that things would go astray unless he was in the bathroom.

“I, Rigathi Gachagua, unless things go astray when I am in the bathroom taking a shower. And if I hear things going the way we did not expect, I better come out with soap applied to my body to streamline them,” he explained.

Mr Gachagua lauded President Ruto’s visit to the Mt Kenya region, where he unveiled various development programs, including the controversial affordable housing initiative and construction of roads.

The affordable housing plan, however, was declared unlawful by the court, but the head of state has seemingly ignored the verdict.

Dr Ruto has been traversing different parts of the country, launching projects.

“We congratulate you, President, for visiting Kangema because of development agendas and everything you promised us. Kangema, Murang’a, and Mt Kenya people at large elected you overwhelmingly. They aligned themselves with you. They knew you are a leader who fulfills his promises,” claimed Mr Gachagua.

The DP, during the swearing-in ceremony at Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi in 2022, alleged that the Kenya Kwanza Government took over a bankrupt economy and that within a period of one year, President Ruto has managed to streamline it.

Therefore, the visits he is making to different parts of the country are meant to fulfill his development promises.
