Gathoni Wamuchomba’s cheeky response to MPs lamenting heavy taxation

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has cheekily responded to her colleagues who are now lamenting over heavy taxes imposed by President William Ruto’s administration.

Wamuchomba who appears to have been sidelined by the State for asking the government to work towards reducing the high cost of living by voting against the Finance Bill, now appears to have had the last laugh with the leaders feeling the pinch of supporting the government ‘blindly.’

In a post on the X platform, Wamuchomba quickly reshared a newspaper headline that said, ‘Ruto MPs cry out over high prices’ with ‘Haaaya! Si Gazette ni ya kufunga… (Isn’t the newspaper meant to wrap….)”

Wamuchomba dubbed the ‘defiant’ MP held her head high in the fight over the Kenya Kwanza’s taxation and high cost of living with parliamentarians under the umbrella calling her out for not ‘supporting’ the government’s efforts.’

The first-time parliamentarian also went to the ground and asked Githunguri residents whether they wanted her to vote a yes or no on the Housing Bill to which many of them unanimously besieged her to vote against it.

“Vote no! And if they you do not succeed against refuting the bill, it will go down history that Gathoni Wamuchomba defended the common mwananchi,” one resident told her.

The housing bill was one of Kenya Kwanza’s initiatives that would compel people in formal employment to contribute upto 3 percent of their basic pay (capped at Sh2,500) to the fund.

President Ruto appeared to hit back at the vocal legislator for voting ‘No’ against the bill, saying that it was insincere of some leaders to oppose the Finance Bill because they are privileged.

Dr Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua then intensified an onslaught against the MP and supported the former area MP Kago Wa Lydia, sending her donation money for projects in the area.

Left alone, Wamuchomba protested over what she termed as a ‘male shadow’ looming in her constituency.

She said that during the visit by the Head of State to the area, she was not allowed to walk with his entourage or take a photo with them and was even denied an opportunity into the briefing room.

“The male shadow in Kenya’s politics is growing thicker! I can’t breathe in my constituency as an elected Woman MP,” she lamented.

However, in a twist and turn of events, MPs from Kenya Kwanza recently informed President Ruto that their constituents were growing hostile due to the rising cost of living, driven by high fuel prices and new taxes.
