How Nairobi woman attempted to sell her 5-day-old grandson for Sh400,000

A 39-year-old woman who allegedly attempted to sell her five-day-old grandson for Sh400,000 is facing human trafficking charges contrary to section 3 (1) (d) of the counter trafficking in person Act of 2010.

The woman is accused of colluding with unknown individuals in attempting to sell the minor before police officers posing as interested buyers arrested her on April 9, 2023.

The accused person travelled to her rural home in Kakamenga County on April 7, 2023 – four days after her 16-year-old daughter delivered and returned to Nairobi with the infant the next day promising to take care of the infant.

She told her daughter (the child’s mother) that she would visit the child after schools closed. However, she allegedly initiated a plan to sell the infant and the plot was leaked to the police by a Good Samaritan.

The police officers based at Kasarani Police Station in Nairobi posed as potential buyers and started negotiations for the baby, offering Sh300,000 while the accused demanded Sh400,000.

They arranged a meeting at a city restaurant and eventually arrested her and rescued the baby and took him to a children’s home.

The accused person’s daughter was arrested on April 9, 2023 hours after the suspect was arrested. She was later escorted to Kasarani Police Station where she recorded a statement with the police during the investigations.

The 16-year-old is listed as a witness in the case against her mother and has been placed under protection.

The suspect has been in custody since her arrest after police constable Jackson Mwachala of Kasarani Police Station, who is investigating the case, obtained orders at the Makadara Law Courts to detain the suspect for 14 days to conclude investigations.

The accused denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Lewis Gatheru of Makadara Law Courts and was released on a bond of Sh200,000. Hearing of the case will start on May 9, 2023.
