Kimemramba? Why Ruto’s tree planting excersise flopped

President William Ruto says the tree-planting exercise he recently launched has flopped because those involved did not pray for it to be a success.

Speaking in Jerusalem where he is on an official tour, President Ruto said if this new model of praying first before planting trees is taken up, then Kenya will be able to plant 15 billion trees in the next decade.

“Kenya has been honoured with the tremendous privilege to host the Africa Climate Summit in September 2023, I am confident our commitment in the field of environmental protection and look forward for your strong support and participation to make the event a memorable success. I was honoured early today to join the list of world leaders who have planted trees at the groove of nations Jerusalem forest,” the President observed.

“That event has given me new meaning for tree planting, that it is not only a good thing to protect the environment, I was pleased to also learn this afternoon that it is also biblical and it is also spiritual. For the first time, I found out that we had to pray before we plant trees, we have always tried to plant trees in Kenya and our success has been mixed. I think because we did not have the element of prayer. So now that we do I am very confident that we will succeed in our plan to plant 15 billion trees in the next 10 years,” he said.

On December 21, 2022, while marking his 56th birthday the Head of State launched a programme to combat climate change.

It included the distribution of 1,000 tonnes of tree seeds to 18 centres across the country to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, stop and reverse deforestation, and restore 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes through the African Landscape Restoration Initiative.

The tree planting exercise comes at a time Kenya is enduring a drought brought by failed rainy seasons, forcing Kenya to purchase food from neighbouring countries including Tanzania and Uganda.
