KRA starts probe after Sh1.1m in foreign currency is intercepted at JKIA

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers on Thursday announced they had intercepted a consignment of foreign currencies disguised as ‘collector’s items’ at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

In a statement, the authority said they had nabbed Sh1.1 million in four foreign currencies being smuggled through the airport, destined for Germany.

The consignment consisted of 2,350,000 Congolese Franc, 21,200,000 Ugandan shillings, 30,154 Eritrean Nakfa and 65,000 Burundian Franc.

DENOMINATIONS

They were packed in several denominations of notes and coins, and were intercepted by customs officers on December 26, 2016.

The officials said the shipment had been disguised as collector’s items headed for Fuerth, Germany and the police have launched investigations on the source of the currency and reasons for export.

In October, KRA intercepted more than Sh267 Million worth of fake Euro Currency at the JKIA.

FAKE CURRENCY

The fake currency was in bundles of Euros, concealed in trouser linings.

The passengers were travelling to Dubai aboard EK722 to UAE and according to the flight itinerary they were to come back to Nairobi on October 31, 2016 then proceed to Mogadishu, Somalia on November 2, 2016.

KRA said it has tightened the noose over masterminds of illegal cargo at all border points countrywide and is keen to ensure that Kenya is not used as a dumping ground for counterfeit goods.
