Let former Mungiki members be allowed to pick IDs – Uhuru

By NICHOLAS KOMU January 24th, 2017 1 min read

President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed chiefs not to arrest former Mungiki members seeking to collect identity cards.

The President was speaking on Monday in Wiyumiririe, Laikipia County, where he urged youth to collect their IDs and register as voters.

He said youth who were in the sect have since reformed and should be free to collect their identification documents.

“I don’t want to hear that chiefs are arresting youth because of their past mistakes. They should collect their IDs freely without fear and I will follow up on that,” said President Kenyatta.

He, however, cautioned youth against being used by politicians to cause chaos during the election period.

“Young people, do not agree to be used by these leaders to fight each other. Remember that while you lose an eye fighting each other, those leaders will be drinking at your local bar,” added the President.

President Kenyatta’s directive comes at a time a section of Central Kenya leaders have warned of the resurgence of Mungiki in the region.
