Mama Ida Odinga shares bond with her ‘son’ Gaucho

By Winnie Onyando September 20th, 2023 2 min read

Mama Ida Odinga, the wife of opposition leader Raila Odinga, has opened up on her relationship with renowned activist, Calvince Okoth, affectionately known as Gaucho.

Mama Ida praised Gaucho, referring to him as his son while addressing the public at Ndururuno Primary School in Mathare, Nairobi, where she was commissioning a new school building.

“I was accompanied by one of my sons here, who often humorously calls himself my ‘lastborn.’ He goes by the name Gaucho. He’s the one who proudly proclaims himself as ‘president’. While others may prefer the title of chairman, he insists on being called ‘president.’ Despite his playful self-appointment as my ‘lastborn,’ today, I’d like him to choose someone from this wonderful gathering to be my ‘lastborn,” Mama Ida expressed with genuine fondness.

Gaucho’s journey from the grassroots as the self-proclaimed “ghetto president” has been nothing short of remarkable.

His rise to prominence began in earnest after the August 9, 2022 General Election.

Since then, he has emerged as a prominent figure in opposition political rallies, captivating audiences with his charisma and passion for change.

He’s since developed a close bond with the Odinga family.

Their interactions have not gone unnoticed, with many speculating that Gaucho’s presence reflects a burgeoning political mentorship.

Just a few days ago, the ghetto president stood proudly by Mama Ida’s side as they attended the grand launch of Skyward Express flights in Migori County, a testament to their growing friendship.

On the other hand, Gaucho gifted Mama Ida a precious Luo Bible (Muma Maler) as she celebrated her 73rd birthday, symbolizing the spiritual connection they share.

Their connection deepened further when Rosemary Odinga, the daughter of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya leader Raila Odinga, introduced Gaucho to her family. In a heartfelt gesture, the ghetto president presented Mr. Odinga and Mama Ida with two Kiswahili bibles, underscoring the respect and admiration he holds for the Odinga family.
