Man charged with attempted murder for stabbing girlfriend after breakup


A 32-year-old man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend on the throat severing her windpipe after she broke up with him has been charged with attempted murder.

Mr David Njuguna is accused of attempting to cause the death of Mary Wangechi in Githurai 44 Estate in Nairobi by occasioning cut injury to her neck on June 11, 2023, contrary to section 220 (a) of the penal code.

Mr Njuguna is also facing a charge of unlawfully wounding Ms Wangechi, who is fighting for her life in hospital, contrary to section 237 (a) of the penal code where he is accused of

The suspect fled the victim’s house after inflicting the injuries. The victim dragged herself out of the house and sought help from neighbours who rushed her to Thika Level 5 Hospital where she was admitted for a week.

The matter was reported at Kasarani Police Station the same night by Ms Wangechi’s father. She also informed officers who visited her in hospital that she had been injured by her boyfriend.

The police later traced and arrested Mr Njuguna while he was enjoying himself at a popular social joint in Kasarani Sub County.

Ms Wangechi has been housing the accused person but he disappeared for a week before returning on the night of June 11, 2023.

It was then that an argument ensued between the accused and Ms Wangechi. The complainant told that accused that she was ending their relationship.

The accused is reported to have threatened to kill her before ending his life. He then took a knife and stabbed her before fleeing the scene.

Mr Njuguna has been in custody after police obtained custodial orders to hold him at Kasarani Police Station pending investigations into the matter.

He denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Gerald Mutiso of Makadara Law Courts and was granted a bond of Sh500,000 with a surety of a similar amount. The case will be mentioned on July 10, 2023.
